St. Colmcille's Stone
St. Colmcille's Stone submitted by PhilipY : Not so much standing but a stone nonetheless, dating to the Bronze Age. Believed to be the birthing stone of St. Columba. Legend has it that his mother, Elthne, gave birth to him upon this sacred stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A prehistoric tomb, most likely a wedge tomb, forming a low mound with a crown of orthostats all around. Believed to be the birthing stone of St. Columba. Legend has it that his mother, Elthne, gave birth to him upon this sacred stone.

Since then, those embarking for distant lands would spend their last night in Ireland here - mirroring Colomba himself, who chose exile from Ireland.

The top surface of this stone is full of cup marks in which the rain water collects and where some visitors leave coins as offerings. It lies next to a Celtic cross erected by Cornelia Adair (of Glenveagh Castle) in 1911 and a smaller memorial to St Columba.
