The stunning profile of this natural feature provides the centrepiece of the Pilot Mountain State Park in North Carolina.

Used as a navigation aid by the Cawtaba, the two parts of the mountain arguably resemble a reclined female figure on the landscape giving an easily recognisable landmark.

Re: Pilot Mountain by Anonymous on Monday, 23 November 2009
When viewed from US Rte. 52 southbound at dawn, the bare sides of the mountain take on the appearance of a tribal council sitting shoulder to shoulder and staring out towards the highway. This effect can be seen faintly at other times of the day, but is very clear at dawn as the sun is just clearing the horizon. It is clearest as the highway comes alongside the mountain. The sitting figures all seem to have different faces and slightly different dress. Magnificent!
