Mounds, Adobe Pyramids, and Platforms in Piura Department, Peru.
Discovered by a construction crew in January 2008, the structures are much eroded and covered in a layer of sand and soil. Finds are indicative of a culture designated Vicus, which was originally known only from their looted ceramics found on the antiquities market. Since then actual sites associated with the culture and been found and dated to 200BC through 300AD.

The site near Laynes consists of 6 to 10 adobe "pyramids" although some reports describe one large pyramid and multiple smaller "public" structures. Numbers of structures also vary among reports. With similar contradiction the site is reported to cover areas from 500 square meters to 2 by 1.5 km. As more information is available, this description will be edited.

The location given is to the village nearby, not the site itself.

Note: Adobe pyramid complex discovered in northern Peru.

National Geographic on Laynes Vicus Site in Peru by bat400 on Tuesday, 26 February 2008

Submitted by coldrum ---

The remnants of at least ten pyramids have been discovered on the coast of Peru, marking what could be a vast ceremonial site of an ancient, little-known culture, archaeologists say.

In January construction crews working in the province of Piura discovered several truncated pyramids and a large adobe platform.

Officials from Peru's National Institute of Culture (INC) were dispatched to inspect the discovery.

Last week they announced that the complex, which is 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) long and 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) wide, belonged to the ancient Vicús culture and was likely either a religious center or a cemetery for nobility.

The Vicús was a pre-Hispanic civilization that flourished in Peru's northern coastal desert from 200 B.C to 300 A.D. and is known for its decorated ceramics.

Experts say little is known about the culture, because its sites have been heavily looted over the years.

"We found several partial pyramids, at least ten," said César Santos Sánchez, chief archaeologist for INC's Piura division.

"We also found a large adobe platform that we speculate could have been used for burial rituals. But we cannot know without further testing."

Ancient Pyramids found in town of Piura by bat400 on Friday, 22 February 2008
(User Info | Send a Message)
Ancient pyramids belonging to the Vicus culture were found in the village of Laynes, province of Morropón (Piura), by workers of the government-run program “Construyendo Peru” while they were performing routine maintenance activities in the area.

The discovery attracted great attention from archeologists of Piura’s National Institute of Culture (INC) who after visiting the area determined that it was a cemetery or religious site of the high hierarchy of Vicus culture. The archaeological complex covers an area of 500 square meters and includes six pyramids built entirely of adobe.

The authorities of Laynes, along with the Municipality of La Matanza (Piura), will joint efforts with Piura's National Institute of Culture (INC) to protect the site from looters and treasure hunters.

The discovery occurred on January 22 before the eyes of astonished workers of Construyendo Perú.
