davidmorgan visited on 1st Jul 2019 An impressive fortress.
Built by the Chimu culture. An important city of the Chimú culture dating from around 1300 CE.
After Inca conquest of the Chimu culture, the site was used as a temple for sun worship. The original name of the site is unknown.
Spaniards of the early colonial period describe a system for raising water at the site and mention decorations of birds, animals, and fish. The site was looted early in the colonial period by looters looking for gold and silver.
