Museum of pre-Columbian art in the Pueblo Libre District of Lima, Peru. The museum is housed in an 18th-century vice-royal building with a large garden. The chronological galleries show artwork from 4,000 years of Peruvian history grouped by geographic regions.
The collections core was assembled in the first half of the 20th century by the Herrera and Hoyle families, sugarcane barons. Rafael Larco Hoyle was given what had been the private collection of this uncle and father and opened it to the public in 1926. His interest led to further collecting and excavations where he documented archaeological finds and context. Many of his proposals and assessments of cultural chronologies for the North Coast of Peru are still considered valid.
There is a separate gallery of pre-Columbian "erotic" pottery grouped by themes.
The museum can still be considered as an art gallery with fewer explanations of technology and cultural change than can be found in the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History. Displays are beautifully arranged with modern lighting, cases, and brief descriptions in six languages.
The museum building was built over a 7th-century pre-Columbian pyramid, one of several dozen found in the Lima area.
