El Aguacate
El Aguacate submitted by SolarMegalith : Stairs leading down to the best preserved tomb of Tierradentro culture in El Aguacate (photo taken on March 2012). (Vote or comment on this photo)
A group of partly damaged Pre-Colombian rock cut tombs is located in the mountains south from San Andres de Pisimbala. The tombs belong to Tierradentro culture which left many complexes of underground tombs in this area. Most of them were cut between 500 and 900 AD and consist of the stairs leading town to the burial chamber. In some cases (for example Segovia) the wall-paintings have survived till nowadays, but in El Aguacate they are preserved only in one tomb. At least 5 tombs are completely collapsed.

El Aguacate is signposted on a mountain trail starting near the archaeological museum in San Andres de Pisimbala. The trail is quite difficult, especially after the rain.

Special thanks for my father who visited this and other sites during his trip to Colombia.
