Rock Cut Tombs in Colombia

Shaft-and-chambered hypogea in Segovia (known also as Alto de Segovia) are the finest preserved necropolis of the Tierradentro culture. They consist of the spiral staircases which lead down to the burial chambers decorated with paintings. The vaulted ceilings of the chambers (the largest reaching up to 10-12 m of diameter) are resting on columns. Alto de Segovia includes 25 hypogea, most of them with paintings. They were cut between 500 and 900 AD by agricultural societies inhabiting this area.

Alto de Segovia is located about 500 m north from the Archaeological Museum of San Andres de Pisimbala. It is possible to enter the burial chambers.
