Aluta visited on 28th Jun 2015 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 5 A fun place for US megalith fans. Built after a dream about megaliths, and it does have a dreaminess about it. It's up on the Kittatinny Ridge, surrounded by woodland and next to a religious retreat. There is a lovely chapel with a big stone in the centre, where you can sit and read or contemplate.

Columcille Megalith Park
Columcille Megalith Park submitted by Aluta : This trilithon, called Thor's Gate, is one of the highlights of Columcille. Other features include a circle of low stones and a construction that gives the appearance of being the entrance to a long barrow. There are also two very small chapels, not megalithic, built more on a medieval model. A third chapel, to be built underground, is under construction. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Modern stone circle in Pennsylvania.
For a modern site, Columcille has a surprisingly lovely feel. It is open to people of all faiths and traditions, used by pagans, personal growth groups and shamanic practitioners, and adjacent to a Christian retreat and meditation center. The partially wooded property includes a small chapel, a stone circle, a large trilithon (called Thor's Gate), a number of trails and a meditation pond. It boasts over 80 standing stones.

Its position on the side of a wooded ridge, surrounded for the most part by natural forest contributes to its peaceful ambiance. Recommended for stateside megaraks--not the real thing, but clearly inspired by a true love of megalithic sites. (During her waning years, we took my mother, who delighted in all things connected with the British Isles, and she spent some lovely hours there.)

Columcille Megalith Park
Columcille Megalith Park submitted by Aluta : When we arrived at Columcille the other day after two days of heavy rain, this young raptor was using the taller stones to watch for small creatures coming out for the plentiful beech nuts knocked to the ground by the rains. I was so intent on the stones, I didn't notice him until I was this close. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Columcille Megalith Park
Columcille Megalith Park submitted by Aluta : These medium-sized stones form part of the stone circle at Columcille. The broad often sunlit clearing in which they stand is usually the visitor's first sight as he or she enters the megalith park. At the visitors' center, a small green building to the side, one may buy various modest items or sit in a chair and listen to 'Celtic' music and read books about 'Celtic' people without charge, as p... Samhuinn Celtic New Year Torchlit Pageant

Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Samhuinn, the beginning of the Celtic New Year, will be acknowledged with a beautiful torchlit pageant among the Standing Stones. One of Columcille's most memorable annual celebrations, celebrants will be lead by drummers through torch and luminary lit paths while met by storytellers and music along the way.

The Celtic New Year/Samhuinn falls in a period called "No-Time" which acknowledges the days that are "left over" between the 13-month Celtic Calendar year and the 12 lunar months. It is within this time that the veil between the worlds is thinnest, and all the energies wander about and when ancient Celts would communicate with ancestors and those that had passed.

Come celebrate "No-Time" with Columcille!
Dress with celebratory flare and, of course, appropriately for the weather.

(Bring a flashlight, plan your layers and wear walking shoes)

Please, no pets or alcohol permitted.

Car-pooling is appreciated due to limited parking.

Cider and donuts, available by donation, will be served before and after the ceremony.

*There will be drumming in the circle after our celebration. Feel free to bring your drum and join in with the spirit of love and light!
