Museum in Ica Department.A small Museum in the former home of Maria Reiche, the archaeologist perhaps most responsible for both the popularization and preservation of the Nazca Lines. Reiche (1903-1998) theorized that the lines were built as an observatory and astronomical calendar, and idea that has been generally discredited. However, she devoted her considerable energy and her own money to educate and lobby for permanent government protection for the lines from development.
She was also one of the first to demonstrate, with simple tools, how designs of the Nazca Plain could be created. Her methodology has been used many times to replicate increasingly complex designs, and had lead to the discovery of partially completed ancient figures.
The museum contains her papers, photographs, and personal effects. Reiche is also buried on the grounds.
