Geoglyph in Ica State, Peru.
A free form tree and two reaching hands. Lines made by removing darkened pebbles to reveal the lighter desert surface beneath. Made by the Nasca culture in the first millennium.

This site lies directly by the PanAmerican Highway. A viewing platform at the top of a tower allows visitors to see both of these two geoglyphs.

Note: Plan to be carried out to protect Nasca Line figure from Heavy Rains. See comment.

Nazca Lines to be protected from heavy rains by bat400 on Monday, 20 April 2009
(User Info | Send a Message)
submitted by coldrum ---
The National Institute of Culture (INC) is currently preparing a preservation project to prevent damaged caused by weather on the enigmatic Nazca Lines, (Ica region) reported Mario Olaechea, resident archaeologist of this organization in Nasca.

"It's a project that will serve the whole area in general, to avoid events such like the one last January, when rainwater accumulated and drained, covering with layers of clay the geoglyph called La Mano (The Hand),", he said.

"Only 1% of the geoglyph was covered by the clay layer, and will be withdrawn very soon", he said.

Heavy rains have affected the region during the first quarter, but without causing serious consequences. "The most important part of this project is the preventive stage", Olaechea said.

Heavy Rains Damage Peru's Nazca Lines by bat400 on Wednesday, 21 January 2009
(User Info | Send a Message)
Heavy rains have damaged part of one of Peru's top tourist destinations, depositing clay and sand on mysterious figures etched in the desert sand by indigenous groups centuries ago.

The rains, which are uncommon on Peru's dry coastal desert, washed off the nearby Panamerican highway and pushed sand on top of three fingers of a geoglyph in the famed Nazca lines, archeologist Mario Olaechea of Peru's National Culture Institute said Monday.

The fingers form part of a pair of hands.

Olaechea said the damage was minor and the institute planned to clear the material and restore the geoglyph.

Archeologists have warned the lines are vulnerable to flooding. But Olaechea said it was the first known instance of rain damage.
