Ancient Temple in Huanta Province, Ayacucho Region.
Vegachayoq Moqo is a large courtyard and building complex set within terraces created in a surrounding man-made earthen pyramid. It's oldest portions date to ~500 AD. It is the largest excavated portion of the Wari (Huari) capitol, although much of the complex is still unexcavated.
The courtyard is quadrilateral (roughly 20 x 50m) with walled boundary to the west, earthen mounds to the north and south, and two tiers of wide terraces or galleries (possibly roofed) set with 2m square dressed ashlars above the courtyard along the longest, eastern side. A massive stone wall topped the terraces on the eastern side.
Jessica Joyce Christie (Palaces and Power in the Americas) identifies the original structure as a royal palace, although later development of the site was as an elite tomb complex, so the site may have also functioned as a temple originally. Much later, perhaps when the rest of the structure was in ruins, the site became a general cemetery. Most of the dressed stone ashlars were removed and reused in other locations in Wari.
