Ancient Settlement in Peru.
A trekking destination for years, this Inca village and ceremonial centre has been the subject of continuing archaeological digs which have slowly cleared the site of encroaching vegetation. Similar to Machu Picchu the site seems to have been built in the 1400s as a retreat of Inca nobility and the location of religious and state ceremony.

The site consists of stone temples, other buildings and courtyards, with terraced garden plots and a water system. The nearest mountain top has been covered by a stone platform associated with this site. One can get to this 3300 meter high site by taking buses from Cuzco to the village of Cuchora and then beginning a trek that will take a minimum of 3 days. However, several tour operators are available to make this trek as safe and easy as possible by providing guides, food and equipment.

Note: The White Stone Llamas of Peru are being freed from 400 years of undergrowth. See comment.

Re: Expedition in search of the white stone llamas by Anonymous on Sunday, 12 August 2007
They must be pretty slow mules to take 5 days. The organised treks take only 2 days to walk there!

I thought that was odd, too. Most of the treks seem to take 2 days in, a day there and 2 days out. (Although one advertises a warp speed jaunt of 1 day in and 1 day out.)

The only thing I could think of was that they had mules carrying loads of "expedition" stuff (you know, pith helmates, machete, complete camp kitchen), at a slower pace. :)

Expedition in search of the white stone llamas by bat400 on Saturday, 11 August 2007

Reporting on an expedition to this site from the Canary Islands.

A team of Canary investigators is currently in remotest Peru to study a startling new archaeological discovery which came to light recently in Choquequirao, an ancient Inca site which is being described in glowing terms as Machu Picchu’s “twin town”.

The find consists of a line of white stone llamas embedded in massive terraced stone walls and which, it is thought, could well form part of the entrance to the sacred valley of the Incas.

“After the hardships, mosquitoes and slips along the way what we found was truly worth all the trouble,” said team member Rubén Naveros of La Laguna’s Museum of Science and the Cosmos.

So far 33 of the elegant, minimalist llamas have been uncovered, hidden behind and beneath thick vegetation, but the team thinks there could be as many as a hundred, maybe more. The frieze is unique and has caused a considerable ripple of excitement in the archaeological world because nothing remotely like it has been found in Inca architecture before.

The far-flung nature of the site can be judged by Gotzon Cañadas’s account of spending 22 hours on a bus from Lima to Cuzco, followed by a 4 hour switchback mountain journey in a cramped minibus to the tiny town of Cachora. “It was like world’s end,” he said. Then came the five day mule ride up the Vilcabamba mountains to Choquequirao, perched at an altitude of 3,300 metres above sea level.
