Montville Chamber submitted by redbeard : View of the chamber from the collapsed mid-section of the tunnel. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Souterrain (Fogou, Earth House) in New England
A long, narrow tunnel 38 feet long, that leads into a steep hillside, to a beautiful, corbelled chamber. Its age is unknown.

During a hurricane in the 1930's, a large oak tree was uprooted, and left the middle section of the tunnel exposed, the original entrance to the chamber is so well hidden, it likely would have never been found. A very interesting feature of this site, are inscribed [vertical lines, described as "ogham"] at the tunnel entrance. Lichen present within the lines, indicate that it was not carved recently.
The chamber is located off of Leffingwell Rd, in Montville about 300 yards west of a power-line field that crosses the road. The chamber is approximately 1/3 of the way up the hill, and very difficult to find in the heavy brush.
The surrounding hillside and hilltop is littered with interesting cairns, erratics and stone walls with apparent astronomical alignments.

There are extensive stone works at Montville Connecticut, as shown in Norman Muller's comparison of those works with the site at Oley Hills, here.
