This is Site W on published map. Rock piles are common all over New England. Their provenance is controversial. Some say they are mostly byproducts of post-contact agricultural activity by colonial and post-colonial Euro-American settlers, such as boundary/trail markers or field clearance. Others feel they were erected by Native Americans before and after European contact, possibly for ceremonial or funereal purposes. There are a few other rock piles in the state park that aren't noted on the published map.
