Ancient Temple in Peru.

Ruins of Viracocha temple in Raqchi are located in valley of Urubamba river. The main part of the site is over 90 m long temple constructed mainly from adobe with lower parts of the walls made of andesite blocks. Next to the temple there are remains of huts, possible storage buildings (round constructions with 8-10 m diameter) and Inca baths.

Raqchi submitted by pab : Walking down an Inca street... Beind the main temple complex at Raqchi, there is a succession of six connected squares, each with six dwellings built in the same style. This photo shows the view along the roadway between the squares - very special to be able to walk down such a street! The layout of the streets (and the circular storage units) show up wonderfully on Google Earth....... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Raqchi submitted by pab : Storage units, Temple of Viracocha. Just to the west of the main temple complex, there is a huge complex of 200 identical circular buildings, arranged back to back in rows of 10. Each building had a narrow opening into a space some 20 feet across, the walls rising as high as 10 feet. These circular buildings are said to definitely pre-date the Incas by some centuries, probably being orig... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Raqchi submitted by pab : Temple of Viracocha, Raqchi. Beautifully curves walls at one end of the main temple wall show the Inca masonry skills. The niches are believed to have been used for statues - the god Viracocha was the creator god, superior to all the other objects of Inca worship such as the sun, moon, and natural phenomena. Raqchi submitted by pab : Temple of Viracocha, Raqchi, Peru. This section of temple wall shows the excellence of masonry used for the lower sections of the huge walls. As in other locations where Inca structures have survived many earthquakes which have destroyed later buildings or additions, the walls have a wonderful lack of symmetry which allows for the frequent earth tremors. Raqchi submitted by pab : Temple of Viracocha, the Creator god. This was once a major centre on Inca civilisation and religion. This photo shows the main ancient temple wall, the lower parts being typical Inca cut and fitted masonry, while the upper section is made of adobe. The roof tiles are a modern addition, to protect the adobe from rain and erosion. Photo, Sept 2013
