Foxborough submitted by TheCaptain : A map showing the individual sites of the Foxborough Forest from Stonesites.net by Chuck Drayton. Follow that link to their copy of the map where the yellow markers on the map are clickable to find out more about each location. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A collection of unusual, possibly ancient native american stone sites within the Foxboro State Forest, now known as F. Gilbert Hills State Forest near to the town of Foxborough in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, about 22 miles southwest of Boston. This one area of the state park has probably the densest combination of 'prayer seats' in New England, if indeed they are prayer seats. This page, positioned for the Forest Headquarters, acts as an overall collection page for all of the various individual sites under their own names. Map at left by Chuck Drayton

Some details of each site can be found at Stonesites.net, again by Chuck Drayton with a map showing the individual sites within the forest. The yellow markers on the map on their page are clickable to find out more about each location and we have most of them on our pages so see also the nearby sites list on our pages for more.

No problem. More to come on Foxborough as soon as i can get out there. Update: Got out there yesterday to take advantage of a break in weather with good photo conditions. Will post some missing sites soon, specifically S, K, M, and E on published map. Revisited L and N and found some new things, so those will be updated as well.

Its appropriate to have a group record like this that lists the various individual sites under one "Foxboro" umbrella. I do think these sites are interrelated and connected in many ways, whatever their purpose or history may be.

There are many similar groupings of stone structures all over New England, often clustered around a specific watershed, knoll, or hill just to name a few land and water features. Foxboro is but one well-known example.

However this one area of F. Gilbert Hills state park has probably the densest combination of 'prayer seats' in New England, if indeed they are prayer seats. I've trail walked extensively in Mass, RI, and CT and no other location comes close. Why are they there in such profusion and barely seen elsewhere? No one knows.

Unlike the UK and Europe, where academic archaeologists take megalithic sites seriously and consider them worthy of study, their counterparts in my area are generally dismissive of stone structures here as being any more than the product of post-contact agricultural or property marking activity by European settlers. The "native american" ceremonial explanation is usually last on their list, if at all.

This attitude is changing, but very slowly. Lack of academic or govt funding for serious studies is a big part of the problem. But we avocational enthusiasts keep uncovering this stuff.

Thanks Stonetracker for posting so much information and photos on these sites. They are rather mysterious and definitely need more research. This overview page called Foxborough - thanks for this Martyn/Captain - it works brilliantly. Kudos also to Chuck Drayton who created the original StoneSites.net which we can browse also.
