Ancient Mine, Quarry or other Industry in Faro
At the border of the large estuarium near Faro - next to a golfcourse of Quinta do Lago - is a dirt road that leads to this Roman fishindustry. It is dated 1st century AD. It is situated near Ludo, where you can still find saltmining fields.
The Romans have build 5 tanks to preserve fish or to make Garum, the fishsauce that can be obtained after the proces of fermenting fish with salt and herbs. The tanks were waterproof with opus signium, a mixture of lime, sand and crushed brick. In roman times the tanks were covered. It is a nice place to visit and get a feeling of how this area was a good place to inhabit and trade.
