Serra de Estrela
Serra de Estrela submitted by Alta-Falisa : Probably the most characteristic stone. This photo also shows how foolish it would be to venture "barehanded" along this slope, only to find more of the same. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Possible Cup marks on several stones, some on the edge of a sheer drop! Just along the N.339 road. (Torre, the summit of Serra da Estrala where everybody converges, is about 1 km further when coming from Covilha.) Serra da Estrela as a whole is a major tourist attraction in North Portugal.

About 60m after the signpost Altitude 1900 m, coming from Covilha, look for a massive outcrop: Cântaro Magro, 1928 m, (see photo) will catch your attention. Luckily, there is a small car park on the bend in front of that outcrop. Just get out of your car and you will see the cup-marked stones "right at your feet".

The coordinates I give correspond to that car park, as you should most probably not take the risk to venture along the steep slope! I did not take that risk myself : I have added photos of what I saw from the road.

Worth noticing (best on photo 133034 below) are several good examples of rock-cut basins.

Serra de Estrela
Serra de Estrela submitted by Alta-Falisa : Large rock-cut basins. All the photos were taken from the car park mentioned in the description; the slope of the hill is very steep and dangerous. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Serra de Estrela
Serra de Estrela submitted by Alta-Falisa : Coming from Covilha, once you see the board "Altitude 1900m", keep going for about 60-80 m (you have no choice, anyway) and you'll find a small car park for 3 cars on your right: the viewpoint seen on the first photo. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)

I agree with anon. The 'cup marks' have got straight sides, possibly even under-cut, and flat bottoms, from what I can make out. Put it this way: if you said they were solution holes, I'd agree whole-heartedly with you.

Impressive scenery. Judging from the photos the 'cup-marks' may well be the result of erosion. Is there any further evidence allowing this to be filed as 'Rock Art'?
