Museum in Portugal

By the end of the 19th century, the archaeological importance of this site -Rossio do Carmo- was already known. This fact was proven in the years 1980-1990 with an archaeological excavation that uncovered the structures of a basilica and dozens of graves (dating from the 5th-8th centuries after Christ). Part of these structures are preserved. On site are visible still sealed graves (with the tombstone at the place of origin), architectural elements such as columns and capitals, an important collection of funeral tombstones and other objects, among which we highlight a buckle, earrings, a fragment of mosaics and other ceramic objects.

The museum also has a large stone inscripted with the SouthEast language. Dating from 1000-400 BC. It was a reused stone.
This integrates the communities that lived in this area from the Bronzeage to the Ironage.
These inscripted stones tell about a hundred legends about the Serra do Algarve and Baixa Alentejo. Written in Greek and Phoenician characters, an indigenous language yet to decipher.
In Almódovar is a museum specialized on this script and stones.
