Ancient Cross in Co. Kilkenny
Killamery High Cross stands in the graveyard at the monastic site of Killamery some 10 miles N of Kilkenny.
A monastery was established here by St Goban, a disciple of St Fursey, in 632 CE. There is also a cross-base, two holed stones (bullauns) and a holy well. Killamery is also spelt as Cill Lamrai.
The high cross is 3.06 metres tall and dates from the 9th century CE. It is richly sculptured on the shaft of the E face with what are thought to be three marigold flowers. There is a boss in the middle of the wheel-head that is surrounded by interlacing serpents and, above the boss an open-mouthed dragon. On top of the cross a gabled cap-stone. The prophet Noah in his ark is depicted on the arm and scenes from the life of St John the Baptist. On the base an inscription recalls: OR DO MAELSECHNAILL or 'a prayer for Maelsechnaill', who was high king of Ireland 846-862 CE.
There is also a cross-slab of an earlier date with a cross carved onto it and an inscription OROIT AR ANMAIN N AEDAIN. Two holed-stones or bullauns can also be seen, one stone in particular has a hole going right through. Down some steps and next to a standing stone there is a holy well, possibly St Goban's Well.
