Estação arqueólogica de São Gens
Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : The big boulder overlooking the "Necrópole" (cemetery) of São Gens can be considered as part of the ancient site. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)
An important Necrópole (cemetery) of about 10-12 clearly identifiable Sepulturas (tombs), but there are many more around less easy to spot and less well preserved.

Recently (post-2010) signposted several times all around, the last (and most useful) signpost being at (40.66035, -7.39536) ; it is visible from both directions. From there, 500 m on an earth road (not meant for ordinary cars, but nonetheless "doable").

The big boulder (photo on the left) usually shown to illustrate the site is not "technically" part of the Necrópole, but it must have always drawn the attention and is now a useful landmark.

The coordinates I give for the site correspond to this boulder. Follow the earth road ; the site is just under the HV line.

March 2015.

Estação arqueólogica de São Gens
Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : This "Sepultura" was a bit isolated ; there are, so I read, many more tombs further afield ; but the people whom I met on the site, familiar with the site, didn't know any others than the ones at the foot of the big boulder. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Estação arqueólogica de São Gens
Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : Two "Sepulturas" cut side by side. There are never more in the same rock, at least in the early stage. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Estação arqueólogica de São Gens
Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : "Sepulturas" (tombs) are generally cut in their own rock outcrop ; at the most there are two, but not necessarily side by side. March 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Estação arqueólogica de São Gens
Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : Under way, you'll come across these Roman ruins. The "necrópole" (cemetery) is 150 m further, under the HV electric line. March 2015.

Estação arqueólogica de São Gens submitted by Alta-Falisa : The last signpost, at (40.66035, -7.39536). In the background, the HV line that will help you to locate the site. From here, 500 m on an earth road ; a bit bumpy half-way, but this road is not meant for ordinary cars. March 2015.
