The Bocan Stone Circle in Co.Donegal is a large despoiled ring-cairn with seven massive stones still erect in the east. Two stones larger than the rest mark the entrance. The alignment of the circle is E/W, the peaks of Sliabh Sneacht and the three Paps of Jura visible in the distance may have been used to create this imaginary line.

A report in 1816 states that graves have been uncovered at the Bocan Stone Circle and a number of burial pots were also discovered. There are several standing stones within view of the Bocan Stone Circle.

Bocan Stone Circle: recent damage by Andy B on Friday, 11 August 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
On 17 May 2017 we paid a visit to BOCAN stone circle on Inishowen peninsula.

When we walked up to the circle in the very recently ploughed field, we were appalled about what we saw…

Part of the circumference of the circle has been cut away and stones that had been there were removed and thrown into the middle of the circle.

On the other side of the circle, the outline of the circle has been ‘rectangled’, I mean the outline /circumference is straightened in a rectangular shape. Again some stones have been removed from their original position and thrown in the centre.

There is still a piece of farm equipment that seemed to have been used to ‘upright’ a stone that probably(°) wasn’t originally there. It appears to be a ‘new’ stone, I mean clean split / cut stone. (°) Google Street view April 2017: that tall stone isn’t there.

I’ve included some photo’s to show the extend of the damage done to the circle.

We are truly worried about the extent of the  damage done to this megalithic site.

Visit Inishowen has forwarded our pictures to the Office of Public Works.

Since our return home I’ve been searching the internet for picture and other visual material of Bocan Stone Circle.

Here follows a comparison of my photos dd. 17th May 2017 with photos taken of the Internet.

I would like to appeal to you for help with gathering as much visual/photographic details (photo, film, sketch, drawings,...) of BOCAN stone circle as possible, so the Office of Public Works (who according to “Visit Inishowen” own and manage the site) can investigate and hopefully carry out a full reconstruction of the site.

Now the location of some of removed stones is still visible. The question is; which (removed) stones go where. Therefore the need for visual images prior to 17/05/2017.

I hope you can help.
Many thanks.
Diana Redig from Belgium.

I returned again to Bocan Stone Circle on 22, October, 2004. This happened to be my birthday and the weather at the time was cold but most gorgeous. Arrived fully prepared and attired for the mud and muck of the cow pasture. This time however, I offended a few of the calves in the field closest to the gate, which in turn upset a few cows, which in turn, led to me being chased by not one, but two cows! They eventually became disinterested in me but not before giving me a good fright!

The one large stone in the middle of the circle looks quite like the "Hag's Chair" up at Loughcrew. I wonder if this is an intentional creation. There is something quite soothing to me about this site, even though of its location in the cow pasture. I feel at ease when visiting.

I have one question though if anyone can answer: Do any surveys exist of this circle?

Patrick. I will try to add a few photos to this site as soon as I can.

Re: Bocan by Anonymous on Friday, 20 December 2002
Vicky,
I need to remember my password next time. I visited Bocan on 6, December, 2002. Glad i noticed the standing stones as I was passing the house in front of the circle. I was impressed with the location and the remaining upright stones. Touch some wonderful photos which I need to send to Andy as soon as I get a chance. Condition of the field up to the site was terrible! Thank goodness I had good gortex hiking boots and waterproof hiking pants in the car. Waded through ankle deep muck and mire while staying close to the lower fence-cows in the field and wasn't sure how upset I might make them-wanted to be close in case I needed to hop the fence! Owner of the farmhouse has a sign (albeit tiny) posted on his tree directing visitors where to go-does not want cars in his driveway. Intrigued by the various shapes of the standing stones and the one large stone toward the center of the circle, looked strangely similar to one of the curbstones at Loughcrew atop Carbane East? (sorry, at work, don't have my notes with me). Will provide better description in the next few days, when I remember to bring my notes with me! Any questions, contact me at MahonPJ@aol.com

Patrick
