Very large boulder with mass carvings, boulder now in stream bed in deep cut valley, having fallen from a higher location in recent years. This is the most important of the rock carvings in Grenada and one of the most important in the whole of the Caribbean for the sheer number of carvings on one rock.
Although local literature (almost impossible to find) refers to sixty carvings there are many times that number.
To find this rock, take the main road South from Sauters passing through Ellie Hall. Shortly after passing through Ellie Hall, look out for a junction West to Montreuil and Tricolar. Stop on this junction and look for a small ruined shelter-like building. From that building look down into the stream below. This very large boulder will be apparent. With a low power pair of binoculars or a 200mm lens, you should be able to pick out all the detail necessary. getting down into the stream bed is a real scramble and difficult. If there is a local guide who offers to take you down - offer 10ECS/5 USD/2.50GBP equivalent. It's nothing to you but goes far in the local economy. If looking for this site on Google Earth, be aware that the shown location for Mount Rich is several kilometres incorrect as are many of the marked villages.
Dating is the subject of much debate but said to correspond to the Late Troumassoid / Suazoid period (ceramaic dating periods) approximately 900-1100AD. This is despite the fact that imagery on ceramics of those periods significantly differ from imagery on rock art but the theory has recently been advanced by Henry Petitjean Roget that ceramic art was executed by women and rock art by men. However, the possibility must exist that the rock art throughout the Lesser Antilles is older than this and, possibly, multi-period.Shortly after posting this, I shall leave a large high-res photo on my flickriver photostream at www.flickriver.com/photos/mikeshort so that you can examine these amazing rock-carvings in detail.
