St Brigid's Holy Well Kildare
St Brigid's Holy Well Kildare submitted by AngieLake : St Brigid's Holy Well on 9/11. I visited twice on the 11th of September, 2001, returning to say a prayer for the victims of the terrible 'Twin Towers' disaster right after I heard the news while visiting Kildare Cathedral. I seemed a very peaceful, spiritual place, but it is quite a long way outside the town, so I had to drive there. It was so long ago now that I can't recall how far it was.... Holy Well or Sacred Spring in the Republic of Ireland .
I have only paid one visit to this holy well, on 11th September, 2001, directly after hearing about the 9/11 tragedy while visiting Kildare Cathedral.
I'd been browsing the lovely old building and was walking around the graveyard, when the gardener called me to listen to the radio in his shed. It was one of the first announcements of the dreadful event, and my instincts told me to go straight back to the Holy Well, which I'd visited earlier that day, and say a prayer for the victims.
So this photo was taken that fateful day, probably on my first visit, as I'd have been shaking when I returned there. It was a peaceful, spiritual place at the time, very simple, and far from the cathedral, on the outskirts of Kildare.

Prior to this, I'd been walking around the Japanese Garden at Kildare, and following its theme of 'life' (to quote intokildare.ie): "The significance of the gardens is not only artistic and horticultural but also philosophical religious and historical. The garden traces the soul of man from oblivion to eternity using rare plants and landscapes that evoke the exotic."
I'm sure the time I passed the final part of the theme coincided with the planes crashing into the twin towers.
When the book of condolence was opened at the American Embassy in Dublin I visited to see all the flowers and sign the book, that was very very moving.
It was a scary time in our lives, and being in Ireland the news constantly reported on the Irish victims of the tragedy.
