Carnanbane submitted by LizH : Site in Co. Derry: What remains of the entrance and the court. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Court Tomb in Co. Derry

Carnanbane is a damaged court tomb in the Ballybriest area. It is immediately to the side of the road, easily accessible and in state care. It looks very imposing as you approach, the lie of the land makes the stones look much higher than they are. The cairn, the outlines of the chamber and a part of the court are still visible. It has been excavated, in 1937, although some of it was later removed in land clearance.
Just to the south west there is a wedge tomb visible - it is still half buried in peat.
The Ballybriest dolmen is on the other side of the road.
There are a number of sites in Northern Ireland called Carnanbane; this site is near Ballybriest

Sadly a *lot* of Irish sites are like that.
I can see both sides of this problem, irresponsible people trampling crops or disturbing livestock or even damaging the site itself, versus the need to ensure none of that happens.
The usual advice is to ask the landowner if you can arrange to visit the site, but unless you live within easy travelling distance that's not much of an option. As a tourist in the Republic, I found there often wasn't much clue as to who the landowner could be, either.

When we went to visit-we could not enter due to the "Beware of Bull" sign!
