Ancient Cross in Co. Kildare. Old Kilcullen monastic site is about 10 miles N of Athy and just E of the prehistoric hillfort of Knockaulin. A monastery was founded here by St Patrick in 448 CE. St Iserninus was installed as the first abbot. There is a 9th century high cross and a ruined round tower.

The famous granite high cross, dating from the 9th century, is richly sculptured on the front (N face) with a bishop holding his crozier, an axe, bell and two figures kneeling down at either side. There is also a saint destroying an idol, and on the base (back) David and the lion. There are many saints in panels. The base comes from another cross though this has some very fine swirling interlacing and what could be Greek key-patterns.

Also at this site the shaft and base of another cross of the 9th century. A ruined round tower that was damaged in the 18th century.
