Modern stone circle on the Isle of Lewis. Large standing stones (6-8ft ) in rough circle approx a hundred yards across. A few low things that look like burial mounds, some of which have been opened, chambers open.

The area occasionally floods from the nearby loch. Stones/shingle from Atlantic beach encroach on the circle.

Description by neiltonoman: I'm not sure how many are aware of the stone circle near the village of Bru(e) on Lewis in the Western Isles. I found it by accident one day...looking out of the bus window after a fruitless trek out to see the Shawbost circle (couldn't find it!).

It's in a stunning setting near to Loch Mor Bharabhais right by the sea. It is a ring of 9 stones. There are possibly more as the centre of the circle is flooded, but you can make out smaller stones under the water.

To find the circle, the village of Bru is on the A858 about 12-13 miles North west of Stornoway (grid reference NB339495). It's a single track road up to the village then you need to go through a gate and follow the edge of the fenced field (the sea will be on your left) after about 300yds you will see the circle. The area undulates quite a bit so don't worry if you can't see it at first...it will appear...as if by magic!

A word of caution...locals may tell you that there is no stone circle..presumably they don't want loads of sightseers mobbing the area. I've never seen the circle mentioned in any books and people I've spoken to about Lewis don't seem to know it either.

It really is a magical spot...especially IF the sun comes out!

Re: Barabhas by Anonymous on Sunday, 06 January 2019
Hi all,

I''''m slightly bemused by the description of this circle as modern - have just visited this circle today and it does not look modern to me. Of course I may be mistaken but having see the weathering on the stones and their situation they look as old as any of the megaliths on the Isle.

And actually as impressive as anything I have seen on the Isle too, Callanish at a full moon excepted.

i’m no expert but i found these stones independently in late 2017 and am fully convinced they’re not of modern construction.

This is a modern site by Anonymous on Wednesday, 02 March 2016
Hi I thought you might want to know about this as these are listed on your
site as a stone circle. I'd never heard of them till a friend posted photos
of them at the weekend. I went to take photos of them yesterday and posted
them on my FB page. They are not standing stones but a cunningly disguised
shelters for goose shoots!.

I thought I'd share this comment:

Colin Macleod writes: Hello, I'm the Ghillie on barvas estate, I thought I should
tell you these stones are not a stone circle, they were put in by a digger
in the 80's to give the guns a hiding place for shooting geese, the pnd was
also dug out to attract birds into the area. Sorry for spoiling the fun, but
def not a stone age circle!

Hi Colin. John Angus from Arnol here. So who was the digger driver? I am a little bit suspect that any of Tommy's machines could shift some of these stones...

Become a bit facinated by this one! Doing a bit of research before I visit Lewis again in a few months... I chatted to a very good friend who lives almost in sight of here and had no idea it was there! I think I've found the aerial view on Google maps now, couldn't spot it before. Is kind of interesting! There are also some lovely pics on Flickr here
