Cup marked stone lying in the grounds of the ruins of St Ciaron's Chapel, overlooking Kilchiaran Bay. According to the Canmore entry for this site, the cups have been enlarged by parishioners engaging with the stone in wishing ceremonies. The wee chapel is worth a look too: check out the medieval grave slabs within.

For more information for the Cup marked stone see Canmore ID 37470, which says: "About 13m SW of Kilchiaran Chapel and there is a prone slab measuring 1.70m and 0.98m and 0.15m in greatest thickness; its level upper surface bears at least nineteen plain cups up to 110mm in diameter and 40mm in depth. (Graham) In addition, wear has caused a large deep cup, 180mm in diameter and 80 mm deep, to penetrate the stone, and there is another circular, vertical-sided, perforation measuring 70mm in average diameter and expanding to 90mm at the upper surface of the stone."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this site - see their entry for Kilchiaran, Islay, Argyll, which gives directions for finding this stone together with a photograph, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

For tmore information about the Chapel and grave slabs see Canmore ID 37468.
