Chambered Cairn in Cornwall

An entrance grave recorded on the 1908 and 1963 OS maps, with a chamber 1.4m wide by 3.0m long, orientated north east - south west, built against natural boulders on the north and north east. One coverstone, or part of one, remains in place 0.7m above the paved floor of the chamber. There is now little evidence of the mound, but it has previously been recorded as being 4.6m diameter with a chamber built of stone slabs. A boulder wall runs close to this site. When visited in 1988 the internal structure - possibly a cist, as there was no apparent entrance - was found as described by the OS fieldworker, its average height being 0.5m. In plan it was roughly sub-rectangular, the north east angled possibly to a point. The structure incorporated natural rock on its north east corner, and a combination of single slabs with (on the north west side) coursed walling. The centrally placed capstone was 2.5m long by 0.8m wide and 0.5m thick. This structure was situated on a natural rocky knoll, the highest point of the north island of Old Man, with some traces of an original covering mound. On the south east side of the chamber or cist was a possible kerb stone, 1.2m long and 0.5m wide and 0.7m high. To the north east and north west of the structure were natural boulders up to 1.2m high. It is possible that these features were incorporated in a mound of unknown height but approx 5.0m in diameter, evidently robbed. Even though it's on the high point like mentioned above and it's clearly a ruined chambered cairn it's now totally unrecognizable as one.

The grid reference given by Bladup places this chambered cairn within the scheduled area recorded as Historic England List ID 1016179, "Prehistoric cairns, prehistoric to post-medieval settlements and field systems, an early Christian focus, post-medieval kelp pits and quay on Tean and Old Man".
