Early Christian Sculptured Stones in Isle of Skye
This site is recorded as Canmore ID 11282, which gives us details about St Columba's Chapel - an 11th century building and cemetery. Canmore tells us: "The history of this place is complicated and uncertain, requiring further archaeological research to ensure more accurate dating. To the west lies the ruin of the older but more intact Chapel/Teampall of St. Columba (also known as Nicolson's Aisle), possibly contemporary with the original 11th century Episcopal seat here ... Tradition claims that 28 Nicolson chiefs are buried in this mortuary chapel. Of various important carved grave slabs found on the site, a 16th century effigy of a knight still reclines inside."
The Journal of Antiquities also features a page for this site - see their entry for St Columba’s Chapel at Skeabost, Isle Of Skye, Highland Region, Inner Hebrides, which adds that: "Near the ruined chapel is St Columba's Rock from which the saint is said to have preached. The first chapel here at Eilean Chaluim Chille (St Columba’s Isle) on the Snizort rRver was founded in the 6th century by St Columba (521-97) whilst visiting Pictish settlements, and probably after founding his famous monastery at Iona (563 AD)". The Journal also includes a photograph, an aerial view of the site, more information on the saints and the use of the site, plus local folklore, sources of information and related websites.
