Broch or Nuraghe in Isle of Skye

Rubh' an Dunain is an Iron Age promontory semi-broch, consisting of a substantial curved wall over 3 metres tall which effectively isolates a small promontory which is defended on all other sides by vertical cliffs. There is a vast amount of descriptive and structural information about this site at Canmore Site ID 11021. Now classified by Canmore as a 'semi-broch, see their latest report starting 'Publication Account (2007)' onwards, under the 'Activities' heading.

This site has, over the years, been assigned as both a Dun and a Broch.

Current opinion by Canmore (2007) classifies this site as a semi-broch, where the structure is in keeping with that of a broch (galleried walling etc), but where, because it is so strongly defended by vertical cliffs on all other sides, fully encircling walling was not required.

Other examples of semi-brochs are found on Skye at Dun Ardtrek and Dun Grugaig.

A fascinating site. One to add to my wish-list.
