Rock Art in Asturias

WARNING: Visiting these painted rock shelters is not for the faint-hearted. It requires some perseverance, some perilous walking, and some strength to reach the sites. There are 4 caves, each with red oxide bronze age paintings and on our visit we only located 3.

The walk to the shelters starts from the picnic area at a hairpin bend on the way up to the village from the main road. There is an information board there with a pretty useless map. The beginning of the path is clear but quickly disappears amongst the boulder fields on the mountain which is a very exposed place. You have to scan with binoculars to find a double-pointed way marker and if you can find that you're near the first cave.

Cave no. 1 La Conchantoria is reached by clinging onto the steel rope which has been bolted to the rocks and descending the steep zig zag 'path'. This takes you down to the cave which is covered by a metal grill and sits about 15 feet from a rock overhang and a drop of certain death.

Cave no. 2 El Paso is further up the mountain and further to the south. Climb again (on the path if you can find it) to where there's a small woodland of oak and beech. A path seems to appear here which, through the woodland, opens up onto a breathtaking view. You then need to descend downwards to where a steel gate is roped to the mountainside. It looks like you're about step off into the void of a huge ravine but it takes you to a small pass. Exercise extreme caution here as you are close to the edge. Then in the other side of the rock wall you've just passed is the tiny shelter of El Paso. Again, it has a steel grill over it.

Cave no. 2 is on the other side of this grassy ravine so you have to traverse it but it's fairly easy, just don't look down. You'll see the steel rope bolted to the rock and you follow that to the other side of the rock wall to the third cave.

Looks like West-coordinate in stead of East-coordinate.

I was a little confused. The Google Earth co-ordinates are 43.123477,-6.054853 (the east needs changing to west), so I've amended this accordingly. Any problems, please post another comment here. With thanks.
