alchemille visited on 1st Apr 1983 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 5 the caves are now closed to the public. The only cave I know where there is a paiting of a seal. The caves are on the side of a hill. The village of Candamo is hanging on this hill like an anphytheatre. The area is quaint.
Cave with rock art.

"The cave of Peña de Candamo was already known in the nineteenth century by the inhabitants of the area, but it was too early to appreciate the significance of the paintings that adorned the walls of the cave. The first news on the hole appears in the Bulletin of the Royal Spanish Society of Natural History in October 1914. The artistic importance of his paintings, the Solutrean and Magdalenian period, is universally recognized. The cave is open to the northwest near the top of a limestone hill that rises above the valley of the Nalón. By a narrow opening (widened after the discovery) is accessed a cave that is about 60 meters long way into the Hall of prints. Meters after the entrance opens onto a hallway and left, somewhat later, on the right descends to the Lower Chamber of the red signs; the bottom of the entrance hall, it opens the Salon of recorded; and the bottom of this, is the way to the Batiscias Gallery. Declared National Monument and prepared for the visit was exploited in a way that, by the treatment they received paintings and engravings, a very serious way degraded the condition of them. This forced the closure of the cave visitors and initiate studies on the conditions inside the cave. Now it can be visited, but with precautions to ensure their conservation."
