The Dolmen de Montelirio (Castilleja de Guzmán, Sevilla), a large tholos type grave, is located within the site of Valencina.

The corridor, discovered during huge mechanical survey works carried out in 1998, had extensive use of red pigments on the slates forming its internal walls.

Later on, the grave was excavated, confirming the use of red pigments also in the funerary rituals associated with the human remains and grave goods, as well as in the internal walls of the chamber. The Montelirio dolmen has been dated in the early stages of the 3rd millennium BC (Vargas Jiménez, 2004).

In 2007, archaeologists discovered the remains of what they thought was a chieftain in Montelirio, and to their surprise, 19 women believed to have drunk a poison in a ritual to accompany their leader on his journey to the netherworld.

The remains of the women sit in a circle in a chamber adjacent to the bones believed to be of their chief.

New article by Leonardo Garcia Sanjuan in Current World Archaeology, Jan 2018 Issue 87, pp 16-20. Makes no mention of the "chieftain", but speculates that the women in the tomb participated in rites, possibly of the "mother goddess". The women appear to have died of longterm mercury poisoning. Photos of excavation and artistic reconstruction, as well as a short bibliography.
"In 1998, a megalithic tomb was discovered at Montelirio, barely 6km as the crow flies from the centre of Seville, in the lower Guadalquivir valley of south-west Spain. Excavations between 2007 and 2010 produced clear evidence of origins in the Copper Age, which in Iberia spans the period from c.3200 to 2200 BC. Radiocarbon dating considerably tightened that chronology, indicating that the tomb was only used for a brief spell between the late 29th and late 28th centuries BC. The bodies and artefacts deposited during that short period paint a vivid picture of the carefully choreographed religious rituals that played out at the site...."
