Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Argyll

This small island, Eileach-an-Naoimh (Rock of the Saint) is one of the Garvellach Islands in the Firth of Lorne. It is reputedly the burial place of St Eithne, mother of St Columba.

Recorded as Canmore ID 22361, which includes extensive notes about the island, we learn a monastery was established here in 542 by St Brendan of Clonfert. The remains on the island include a double beehive cell, the remains of two churches, an enclosure, a graveyard, a complex of domestic buildings, an undergroud cell, kilns and a barn, along with Eithne's Grave with its associated cross slab.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for St Eithne’s Grave, Eileach An Naoimh, Argyll and Bute, Inner Hebrides, which includes a photograph of the cross inscribed grave slab, background information about the island and St Eithne, along with a list of reference sources for more information.

The Journal notes: "There are no ferries or steamers alighting in Port Cholumcille, but some pilgrims do visit the island and pay their respects at St Eithne’s grave, though they have to hire their own boats!"
