A 3' high stone on the Lamorna Plateau in the west of Cornwall. Nine holes on the eastern side of the stone may be cupmarks.

Castallack standing stone submitted by Hamish : SW454255 Nr Lamorna. There is a good layby nr here for parking. The stone is in a field on the left if you are pointing towards Lamorna,a handy field gate gives you access.Beware of over friendly cows and their leavings. This is 3ft 6ins - 4ft high with an unusual row of what Ocifant calls "cupmarks" what do you think? (1 comment)

Castallack standing stone submitted by Bladup : Castallack Standing stone, The "cupmarks" near the bottom of the stone aren't cupmarks at all, They are holes left over from when the stone was been broken/blown up in the past, This shows that the stone was probably much much bigger before been broken up.

I could have sworn I was standing in a field when I photographed it. Vow Cave is in the Castallack Carn area. Stop being picky.

The standing stone shown in the photos is not of Castallack standing stone which does not stand in a field, neither is the photo of the cave Castallack Carn. The cave is called Vow Cave, Castallack Carn stands about 50 ft downhill from here.

The suggestion that the markings on the eastern side of this stone are cupmarks seems to have been originated by John Michell in 'The Old Stones of Land's End'. Close inspection may lead one to agree with Robin Payne ('The Romance of the Stones') that they are more likely to be relatively modern drill holes made for an uncompleted splitting operation.

The rough top of the stone also suggests that it may once have been much taller, the upper part having fallen or been broken off.

Bran's comment relates to the Castallack Carn stone which has long since disappeared under dense undergrowth. The Castallack stone is in a field (which alternates between arable and pasture) and is always visible.

Spent a lot of time at this site today sunday 1st Sept. If anyone is contemplating visiting it in the near future I would advise them to forget it until the winter, even though there was a group of us that knew its exact location, we could not find it due to the amount of bracken and gorse that has covered this area in the last couple of years.
However I hope to be able to arrange a working party of volenteers to help me clear back the undergrowth in the next couple of months. If there is any one who lives in the area near this site who would like to join us contact me.
