St Mary's Cross

A mutilated sculptured Gothic cross stands near the south-east corner of the modern church. It is said that the stone was, before 1850, by the west wall of St Anthony's chapel at Barbican Lane.

A two tier granite base 0.6m high, and the lower part 1.1m square, supports the upper part of an ornate medieval cross shaft. It is 1.2m high with both arms broken off flush with the shaft which, at the bottom, measures 0.2m by 0.3m in section.

On one face of the broader side there is a Crucifixion relief and on the other side a Christ in Majesty, both damaged. The narrower sides have shoulders below which parallel ribs descend the shaft.
