Ronnie_Pickering visited on 24th Sep 2020 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Hard to give a score for access. Very easy with a boat, difficult otherwise (you could swim I suppose). Using the 2m long paddle of the canoe I measured the depth of the water around the crannog to see if there was any sign of a causeway. On the three sides not facing the shore (N,S,W) the stones drop away quickly, going to a depth of 2 meters and sometimes being burried in the silt, within 5m of the edge of the crannog. On the eastern side, facing the shore of the loch, the depth does not exceed 2 m all the way to the shore. The stones go out much further than on the other sides (15m) from the shore of the crannog before being covered in silt. Maybe there was a stone causeway which has been covered in silt over the years, or it was naturally shallow so they could wade out.

Anne T saw from a distance on 18th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Loch Ederline Crannog: We saw this from a distance only, as the view was impeded by a line of trees and shrubs. We needed to stop on the side of the road, going downhill from Ford, where there was only a short length of fence between us and the loch. A great tanker needed to get past us, so Andrew had to move the car right into the side of the road; even so, he only just scraped by. I hurriedly took some photographs, steadying the camera on a fence post to try and get a decent shot. It was hot and humid, so we decided to beat a retreat to Kilmartin to get refreshments. Only 2pm and already 9 sites under our belt!

There are two crannogs recorded by Canmore on this loch. This one is about 60m from the western shore of the loch and measures about 6m in diameter. This is the part that is above the water-level, so should measure considerably more at its base. Canmore adds: "it is likely that there was a causeway between the crannog and the adjacent shore."

In a 2003 field visit, it was observed that 75% of the structure is submerged, "the site measur(ing) 1.5m high from base to tip. A small cairn construction on top of the mound is likely to be of modern origin."

This particular crannog is recorded as Canmore ID 22798.

Note: A visit to one of the Loch Ederline crannogs by canoe! Including some underwater photos...

Loch Ederline
Loch Ederline submitted by Anne T : The crannog, taken with the camera propped on a fence post to steady it, with the lens on maximum zoom. This, unfortunately, was the closest we got. So many sites to see around here, too little time! (Vote or comment on this photo)
