Ancient Village or Settlement in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro)

Skomer is generally acknowledged to have been settled as an Iron Age farming community, and there is archaeological evidence in the form of remains of huts, field systems and cairns on several parts of the island.

On the northern part, the literature available on the island reports that there is a nucleus of a prehistoric settlement with circular earth and stone banks which are the remains of huts.

The COFLEIN database does not ascribe a definitive period to the settlement, noting 'These various features may represent the seasonal use of the island by groups from the mainland. Alternatively the island could have been perminently (sic) settled. Both forms of activity could be attributed to the Bronze Age, Iron Age or the Roman and early Medieval period.'

The literature does note that some of the features 'are often obscured by growing vegetation from May onwards', and this is what we found last week. On balance, I think I'm happy to have features obscured by such a magnificent display of bluebells!

It is worth visiting the COFLEIN website for aerial photos showing the field systems across Skomer.
