Nelson's monument, also known as Barra Na Cabar is a granite standing stone which stands on a prominent hill close to the Taynuilt village main street.

It was lying prone in 1805 when it was removed by the workmen of the nearby Lorn Furnace and erected in its present position as a memorial to Nelson. Originally situated 1.6 kms to the NW on a low ridge named Barra Na Cabar, SW of Airdsbay House (NM9971 3213), according to local tradition there had been other 'pillar stones' lying in the same field.
The Lorn Furnace produced the cannonballs used by Nelson, the stone bears a dedicatory inscription.
The stone measures 1.7 by 0.91 by 0.66 metres at the base and rises to a height of 3.43 metres.
Walk up a side street next to the Birds Nest tearoom, disabled access is via the road to the church.
All the photos I posted were taken within seconds of each other and show how different a stone can look.
