Having lived on The Lizard for many years, I once had the opportunity to talk to the lady whose commemorative seat now sits behind the cross. The cross originally sat in the middle of what would have been three dirt tracks meeting. As the horse and carts got bigger and the road was tarmaced the cross was moved to the south side by the cottage near the post box. It was later moved to its present position.
The cross does not sit near Green lane the road near by going off to the south is actually called Lloyds lane. Green lane is further down the road to Church Cove.
The Cross sat on a crossing of two energy lines, one that comes down Beacon Terrace from the village and one going down Cross Common and on to Grade Church at Ruan Minor.
The line coming down from Beacon Terrace continues down to Landewednack Church where it crosses the Apollo line under the bell tower. The Apollo lines goes from the church through the farm and then joins Green Lane, where it continues on down to Bass Point, heading out to sea just to the east side of the red marker wall. Going down Green lane there are a number of impressive mark stones now used as gate posts.
An interesting addition to the story of the cross. One day as I was passing I noticed in a nearby garden a large standing stone, about 6ft tall, had appeared. I asked the owner where it had come from and he told me he had found it lying flat in a stone hedge he was removing. I asked him why he had stood it upright and he said he didn’t know he just felt compelled to do it. I dowsed the stone and asked for its original position, which took me back to the middle of the road where the Celtic cross had originally stood.
