Boden Fogou
Boden Fogou submitted by lucasn : The site of the ancient village (Vote or comment on this photo)
Recently discovered fogou at Boden, near Manaccan in Cornwall. Also Prehistoric and Romano-British site.

Excavation of the recently discovered fogou is ongoing. The objective is to complete excavation of the fogou entrance and erect a permanent fence around the excavation area. This will make it much safer for members of the public to visit.

Radiocarbon dates have been returned by SUERC (Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre) from deposits sampled from postholes in the Boden roundhouse. These dates suggest a date of circa 1300BC (the Middle Bronze Age) for the roundhouse.

In January 2010 MAG members excavated a section through the enclosure ditch at Boden. A number of artefacts were recovered from the 2.8m deep ditch, including rim, body and base sherds from a number of Iron Age vessels. Preliminary analysis suggests that these are similar forms to those found during the 2003 evaluation, suggesting construction of the enclosure ('round') in the 5th or 6th century BC. A short report will follow.

2012: Meneage Archaeology Group are currently excavating test pits on the Bronze Age and Iron Age site at Boden Vean on the Lizard Peninsula. Excavation continues on occasional Saturdays.

See the Meneage Archaeology Group group, contact James Gossip for more details.

Boden prehistoric settlement - archaeological dig and finds day near Truro, Sat 16th Jul 2016

If you want to get your hands dirty, join Meneage Archaeology Group to help in excavating the prehistoric and Romano-British site at Boden, near Manaccan. Walk inside the rediscovered Iron Age 'fogou', one of Cornwall's unique souterrains, shallow tunnels whose original purpose is still subject to speculation.

The finds from the excavation will also be on display, revealing the secrets of this exciting site. Cornwall Council Archaeologist and site director James Gossip will be on hand to give tours of the site and answer questions.

I was in Manaccan briefly last week, then on to St Anthony. Got lost in the lanes en route from The Three Brothers of G near Zoar garage! Passed within half a mile of here, I reckon.
