Druidston Stones
Druidston Stones submitted by pab : Looking west towards towards St Bride's Bay - with the Druidston Hotel just over the hedge. The smaller pair of stones is just visible between the main stone and the hedge. Lighting not best calculated to help see the detail, but there were no further dry spells to capture an alternative photo! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Set in a field above Druidston Haven Hotel on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, there is a significant standing stone with another, smaller, pair nearby. Nothing is marked on the OS map, and Coflien records them without giving any opinion as to age or purpose. The larger one is actually visible through the hedge from the lane, and also from the bridle path which goes alongside the field towards Shortlands Farm.

They were notable enough for me to take some pictures while camping in an adjacent farm, to give me a chance to investigate what they were.

Talking to Lansker-man last week, it seems likely that several of the numerous stones along this stretch of coast have been either positioned or used because of their positions, perhaps as markers for routes to significant sites inland. That helped me decide to post these images to invite comments or information from anyone who knows. Incidentally, the various official guides to the Coastal Path stress that the name Druidston comes from the name of a Norman Knight, not from anything older!

The larger stone seems unlikely to have been sited as a rubbing stone, as such a usage would not be helped by the cluster of small stones around its base. I have listed this location as ,not known, rather than definitively stating it to be a menhir - but I definitely think it has something special about it - apart of course from its magnificent location!

Druidston Stones
Druidston Stones submitted by pab : Located about 20m west of the large stone, this combination of smaller stones seemed to merit attention...hopefully someone with local knowledge will be able to say if/when/why they are here if they are recent? (Vote or comment on this photo)

Druidston Stones
Druidston Stones submitted by pab : The southern edge of the stone, showing the cluster of smaller surrounding stones. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Druidston Stones
Druidston Stones submitted by pab : The western face is the most massive - benefitting here from the glow of the sun setting over St Bride's Bay behind me. I did not have an opportunity to take measurements, but I would estimate the stone to be about 4ft at its widest point - hopefully someone local will be able to do a proper job of recording this specimen..! Druidston Stones
Druidston Stones submitted by pab : Standing about 6ft high, this magnificent stone is surrounded by numerous small stones - but they do not give the impression of being packing etc. The impression is more one of them giving some protection to the stone - which would be odd if it had been placed their in recent times as a rubbing stone for cattle.
