Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Dumfries and Galloway

This holy well, near Kilmorie Chapel, is recorded as Canmore Site ID 60746 Kilmorie Chapel, which also includes St Mary's Well and a carved cross-slab.

The earliest entry for this well on the Canmore record is dated 1907, and tells "At the side of this (Kilmorie) chapel there is a well to which people superstitiously resort (W Macfarlane)".

Again, Canmore references E.M.H. M'Kerlie's "Pilgrim Spots in Galloway" book published in 1916 (page 34) that "St Mary's Well is covered by a stone slab which is said to have had an inscription, and the water is piped off".

Has anyone visited this well? Do we know if it still exists? Has anyone any information about why people 'superstitiously resorted' to this well for healing and restorative purposes?

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who has information - please post any photos and comments to this site page - thank you!
