I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 16th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Inveraray Castle Standing Stone: On our way from our daughter’s house to Craignish peninsula (having had the trauma of catching their cat and taking her to the cattery first!) we decided to stop of in Invarary to see our first standing stone of this part of the trip. Mistake. We arrived the day before the Highland Games at the castle started, so the town was heaving, both with coach tours of largely American tourists, and people attending the games. There was a large funfair on the grass by the harbour, which didn’t aid the flow of traffic through the town. We managed to turn up the entrance into the castle, only Andrew had to stay in the car whilst I ran out onto the grassy show-ground area to take photographs of the stone. I chuckled to think what the delivery drivers and people putting up the marquees and stands must have thought of this woman running around the stone with a camera must have thought!

Inveraray Castle submitted by Anne T : As I was in such a rush to photograph the stone and avoid the people setting up for the Highland Games the next day, I didn't write down my orientations. This is one of the narrow and a broad face of the stone, facing roughly east-north-east. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Surprise Visit by Anonymous on Saturday, 03 February 2024
My husband and I unexpectedly visited this lovely stone in October 2023 on a warmish (at times), blustery Autumn day. We were in route to walk the castle grounds when I spotted my first ever standing stone behind a hedge. I have many questions, but can’t seem to find any answers on the history of this beauty. How long has this stone been standing here? How old is it? Were there others? Our few minutes we had were instead given to exploring this treasure stone. I will never forget being beside it, and will always remember these moments dearly. Thank you.

Now (2015) prettily standing on the lawn, easily accessible en route towards the castle. (56.2371, -5.0760)

this lovely stone was rudley ignored and surrounded by a metal fence, beside an overpriced beer tent, during the music festival mentioned above. I enjoyed being near it if nobody else took the slightest bit of notice.
