Castro in Castilla y León
The “Castro de la Mesa de Miranda” is a magnificent example of the imposing fortified towns of the Vettones (A Celtic Tribe). To reach the place the traveler should take the road AV-100 from the City of Ávila until the small village of Chamartín is reached. Once there, you can find a small visitor centre where you can ask for directions or proceed directly to the Castro, taking the graveyard road to the right of the AV-110.
Once you reach the graveyard, continue straight ahead (the small road will turn here to an earthen path) for a total of 3Km and you will reach the site. It is fenced and has a guard, but you can easily enter even if he is not present.
The Castro dates from the 5th century BC and was in use until at least S.II BC. The fact that the place does not present any evidence of Romanization supports the early age of abandonment.
The site features 3 defensive perimeters enclosing a total of 29ha. Each one of these areas is enclosed by a massive rampart with the innermost one displaying a substantial moat and a surrounding “Chevaux-de-Frise”.
Also, the place boasts an external Necropolis with several round huts and a stone alignment composed of three stones of which only two remain intact. The chronology of the alignment has not been provided.
