Despite being on the fashionable NC500 route the footfall on Badnabay Chambered Cairn is unlikely to increase dramatically. It is c. 70 yards SW of the A894, obsured by long grass. The visible remains of Badnabay Chambered Cairn consist of 4 grey standing stones measuring c. 3 ft delineating the N and W Arcs of the chamber. Several other stones just break through the turf or are hidden in heather. Canmore ID 4684 states that the "main compartment is oval, 10 ft 4 ins by 8 ft 9 ins, and built of taller stones, the largest 3 ft 8 ins high."

Douglas Scott tells me that the passage aligns towards Ben Stack, a very prominent peak a little over 4mls SE. Now I'm wondering if the MWSR would perch briefly on the top of Ben Stack.

Doug adds, "All that's left of the cairn are the chamber's inner kerbstones and a few of those forming the line of the passage. From low down at its centre the mountain would be slightly left of the centre of the entrance, and this is where the sun rises in early November and February. I photographed this at about 9:15am on the 1st November 2012. At this time the sun rose to the left and then behind the mountain, where it reappeared near its top at 9:37. Over the next few days the rising sun would have been hidden behind the mountain and after about 4 days, it would rise to its bottom right and the sunlight would have entered the burial chamber."

My great, great grandfather Alexander Fleming was the shepherd at Badnabay in 1816 when he married. There can have been very few people living there at that time and he also could not have been there too long as he and his family left Strathglass due to the Clearances which made way for the sheep. I would love to know if there are any records of that time which would show where and how he was living.
