Cairn in South Ayrshire

Knockdolian Cairn is located in South Ayrshire on the summit of Knockdollian Hill, c. 2 miles NE of Ballantrae. The summit is 265 metres (870 feet) above sea level. A round grassy cairn, measuring c. 10 yards in diameter and 4 feet high has been constructed on the summit plateau. There are visible medium sized stones on the N and W edges of the cairn, which may be original kerb stones. The surface of the cairn has an an irregular grass surface with underlying rocks. A modern OS trig point has been built on the centre of Knockdolian Cairn. The location of the cairn affords extensive 360° views, including Ailsa Craig to the NW. Canmore ID 62028 has further details of Knockdolian Cairn.

Re: Directions to Knockdolian by markj99 on Saturday, 10 December 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
Take the B7044 Colmonell turn off the A77 on the S end of Ballantrae. This road is narrow with very few passing places so I stayed on the road for 3.1 miles to park beside a wood. I walked c. 500 yards back towards Ballantrae to the sign for Knockdolian path. The path climbs steeply NW up a field towards a gate which leads to Knockdolian summit ridge. Knockdolian cairn is located on the summit.
