Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Dumfries and Galloway
Classified by Canmore as a holy well (see their entry for Site ID 61623, 'New Luce, Lady Well'), this is yet another well where there is confusion about its exact location.
The well is first noted by Conway in his 1882 publication "Holy Wells in Wigtonshire", and his information is picked up and used by later holy well seekers.
EMH M'Kerlie in his 1916 publication "Pilgrim Spots in Galloway", page 51, tells us that "two holy wells are to be found near New Luce village, each a Lady Well. One is near the parish church, and another near the Port William road, a little to the east. Canmore Site ID 61563, 'Lady Well, New Luce' is one of these wells but since it is near both the parish church and the Port William Road, the other site is left in doubt".
The Canmore entry ends with an updated entry, which reads: "This well is first noted by Conway (1882) and by others following. However, his informant was the Rev. G Wilson, who only notes the well NX16SE 1 [Canmore Site ID 61563 at NX 1746 6432] in New Luce (Wilson 1899), but from his context, it would seem that this well is a mis-location for NX25NW 23 [Canmore Site ID 62162, 'Glenluce, Lady Well' at NX 2098 5791]."
The Canmore entry for Site ID 61563 tells us, in 1951: "(The well is) A circular hole in the ground approx. 2 1/2 ft deep. The sides are stoned. It contains no water at present. Condition - rather poor." The final entry, dated 1968 says the well is no longer in use.
Does anyone have any information about this well? Are you able to confirm its existence, and its exact location? As a holy well, does anyone know what its waters were used for - baptism, healing and/or restorative purposes?
