Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle in North Ayrshire

Canmore Site 40997

The 'fort' at Seamill occupies a tongue of land projecting from the end of the south bank of the ravine of Kilbride Burn, similar to a number of other structures along the Ayrshire coast.

Christison, in 1893, notes only a massive rampart, 2.4m above the interior, cutting off the narrow neck by which it is approached. An excavation in 1880, found ramparts following the oval summit of the mound, enclosing an area measuring 27m by 18m. On the seaward side, there were two walls, an outer and an inner, about 1.5m or 1.8m thick, and only a few meters apart, which united into one at the north-west apex. On the north side the bank was very steep, and hardly any remains of a wall were seen.
